January 2012 Monthly Sustainability Series: How Building Automation Systems Can Help Achieve Sustainability

Global Green USA proudly partners with the AIA, New Orleans Chapter and USGBC, LA Chapter to present a monthly panel and community discussion series on issues of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

For buildings owners and operators, sustainability may be motivated by several factors such as environmental stewardship, the desire for green building certification, or lower operating costs. No matter the motivation, building automation systems (BMS) can contribute greatly achieving sustainability goals.

BMS help facility owners and operators obtain ENERGY STAR® labeling and LEED® Green Building Certification in new construction, existing buildings, commercial interiors and core and shell development.

This month, join Area Sales Manager of Siemens Building Technologies, Richard Burvant, to learn about Siemens Corporate Sustainability Goals and how building automation systems can help building owners and operators achieve sustainability goals.

Monthly Sustainability Series, October 2011

Global Green USA is proud to partner with the AIA, New Orleans Chapter and USGBC-Louisiana Chapter to feature the next installment in our Sustainability Series on Thursday, October 13.

This month this series will take a look at the integrative design process of bringing local farmed foods and markets to urban spaces, and the unique entities that partner with them to take them out in the cities, including the mobile food truck.  This event will include four mini-lectures of 15 minutes each by local architects who have assisted in designing both urban farms and food markets, non-profits invested in urban farming, and local restauranteurs via food truck service.

Architect Prisca Weems will speak on behalf of FutureProof, the New Orleans Federal Alliance and HRI/ECC, who have just launched a horticulture and urban farming initiative at Federal City as part of a larger integrated strategy to create a landmark sustainable community on 160 acres of the former Navy Base. This is activating a key component of the DPZ masterplan, and is the product of an intensive community-based process. Partners include local educational institutions, non-profits and small businesses including Delgado Schools of Business, Technology and Horticulture, Our School at Blair Grocery, Common Ground Relief, the Latino Farmer's Coop, Sheaux Fresh, the ARC of Greater New Orleans, and others. The developer has made available seven acres for immediate cultivation, and the network is undertaking a number of planting initiatives to increase availability of fresh foods in Algiers, to create nurseries to grow out plant matter for the landscape masterplan and partner wetland reconstruction projects, to provide opportunities for training and workforce development, and to tie into, and play a vital role in, the site-wide integrated stormwater management infrastructure.

After the speaking portion of the event, all are invited to enjoy the food brought to you via  food trucks on site who will be selling their unique local creations for this event, including Geaux Plates who utilize food from Holly Grove Market in their menu.  Come to learn, taste local farmed foods, and enjoy live music at this month's integrative Sustainability Series!

Monthly Sustainability Series, September 2011

Global Green USA proudly partners with the AIA, New Orleans Chapter and USGBC, LA Chapter to present a monthly panel and community discussion series on issues of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Sustainable Design Initiative for Non-Profits Cities Across America

Jenny Pelc with Eskew+Dumex+Ripple will lead this month's discussion on the Sustainable Design Initiative that has been raising the bar on building performance by requiring LEED certification for their major projects. Non-profit organizations and developments can benefit tremendously from lowered operational costs; however, is this possible given typical budget constraints?  What have we learned from these projects about what works and what doesn't to make cost-effective, high-performing buildings? How can we separate the 'green bling' from the measures that really pay off? This session will use case studies to review the approaches to sensible sustainable initiatives for non-profit development.

GRBC MONTHLY PANEL: Green From the Ground Up: How Putting People First Changes What We Do Next

This month's event, is hosted by USGBC-LA Chapter in partnership with Historic Green. USGBC-Louisiana is excited to welcome Historic Green’s invited speaker, Rick Fedrizzi, founding chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and President & CEO since 2004. Under his leadership, the Council has tripled its membership, broadened its influence, and cemented its role as a leadership voice in the global sustainability movement.

The evolution and extension of the internationally recognized LEED Green Building Rating System to all building types and expansion of LEED certification and accreditation through the spin off the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), of which Rick is chairman, has helped build in speed and capacity to the organization. Collaboration, through work with the Clinton Global Initiative, the International Codes Council, AIA, ASHRAE, ASID, ASLA, BOMA and IFMA has broadened the base of green building. Expanded outreach and education, advocacy support for public policy initiatives, and a heightened emphasis on green building’s role in social equity progress are part of Rick’s vision for the organization.
