Public News Service engages and informs communities and supports local newsrooms across the country through trusted news that lifts up voices of justice, solutions and reason. Our 37 state-based news services develop beats of locally-relevant public interest reporting and distributes original news stories on public interest topics free of charge to radio stations, newspapers, and other outlets. We believe that well-informed communities make informed decisions that support a vibrant democracy and a sustainable, compassionate and just world, and it is our mission to help local news outlets engage and inform the communities that they serve.
Public News Service is working to expand our beats of reporting on climate impacts, and focus on solutions-oriented journalism that will engage and inform people about sustainable lifestyles and what local changemakers are doing to build more resilient and adaptive communities. We are growing our audience with a focus on reaching people outside of the public interest media “bubble” who are most likely to encounter disinformation, and engaging them through outlets that they already trust. As an all-remote workspace, we will continue to eliminate waste and our carbon footprint in any way possible.
Public News Service has been almost entirely virtual since its inception 25 years ago, and actively works to reduce and eliminate office waste. As a B Corp, we adhere to sustainable office guidelines, and have implemented an office conservation policy to ensure safe and environmentally-friendly disposal of electronic equipment, and to reduce the use of paper products and conserve water in all home offices.
As a newswire, we have worked with partners in the environmental nonprofit sector since our founding to develop beats of reporting about conservation, renewable energy, and helping people to understand the realities of climate change and how it impacts their lives.
