FloBeds
Environmental Management Policy
Background:
FloBeds acknowledges its roles and responsibilities as a member of the local community and the State of CA. Chief among these responsibilities is environmental stewardship. In addition to complying with all applicable laws and regulations related to environmental permitting, operations and reporting, we go beyond the minimum requirements to ensure that we minimize our impact on the environment and establish a cycle of continuous improvement. This document sets out FloBeds’ vision, policies and procedures with the end goal of resource conservation and waste reduction as it relates to the operations, maintenance and daily activities of FloBeds.
This Environmental Management Policy applies to all of FloBeds’ routine business operations at all locations.
Waste Reduction
This policy sets a goal of at least 90% diversion of all FloBeds waste streams from the landfill and/or incineration, with a commitment to continuous improvement to reduce the remaining residue that goes to landfills or incinerators by at least 1% of baseline disposal each year thereafter. This aligns with our commitments as a benefit corporation and Certified B Corp.
Waste Reduction Policy:
FloBeds will implement waste reduction practices in accordance with observed needs, to include, but not to be limited to:
• Employee training and engagement in regards to waste reduction including: incentives for employee participation, reduced consumption, waste prevention, waste reduction, environmentally preferable purchasing, material reuse, and waste diversion including recycling and composting
• Incentives waste reduction ideas from employees that are implemented, recognizing that often the best ideas come from employees who work on the ‘front lines’ and are most familiar with the waste streams in their area of operations
• Development of infrastructure for materials management waste reduction principles, including accessible, functional and convenient reuse/recycling/composting containers and opportunities for employees and customers
• Quarterly communications with employees regarding waste reduction activities and/or results
• Development of annual waste reduction plans in each department that set specific waste reduction targets and measure progress to these targets
• Engaging suppliers to reduce packaging and to use recyclable/reusable materials
Waste Reduction Performance Metrics:
• Performance will be evaluated on at least an annual basis using recycle, compost, surplus, landfill, and haul tickets to calculate solid waste management performance on a weight basis converted to monthly, quarterly and annual diversion rates.
• This information will be used for waste reduction reporting and other sustainability reporting mechanisms.
Energy Usage
FloBeds is committed to efficient operations and resource conservation. Energy use is a major component of our company’s carbon footprint, and to minimize our impact on the environment we monitor, track and measure our energy consumption throughout our operations and set energy use reduction targets when and where feasible. Energy use includes purchased energy, heating oil, other purchased fuels.
Energy Usage Policy
FloBeds will implement energy monitoring and conservation practices throughout our operations, to include, but not to be limited to:
• Employee training and engagement in regards to energy use and conservation including: incentives for employee participation, reduced consumption, efficient transportation
• Incentives for energy conservation ideas from employees that are implemented, recognizing that often the best ideas come from employees who work on the ‘front lines’ and are most familiar with energy use in their area of operations
• Development of infrastructure for energy conservation principles, including efficient lighting, motion-sensor lighting, programmable thermostats, efficient transportation, and the like
• Quarterly communications with employees regarding FloBeds’ energy use and conservation activities and/or results
Energy Usage Performance Metrics:
• Performance will be evaluated on at least an annual basis using utility provider invoices, fuel purchase invoices, and other energy purchases as applicable, converted to monthly, quarterly and annual energy use rates.
• This information will be used for energy use reporting and other sustainability reporting mechanisms.
Water Usage
Water is a precious resource and its use is another major component of our company’s environmental impact, and to minimize our impact on the environment we monitor, track and measure our water consumption throughout our operations and set water use reduction targets when and where feasible.
Water Usage Policy
FloBeds will implement water usage monitoring and conservation practices throughout our operations, to include, but not to be limited to:
• Employee training and engagement in regards to water use and conservation including: incentives for employee participation, reduced consumption, leak detection
• Incentives for water conservation ideas from employees that are implemented, recognizing that often the best ideas come from employees who work on the ‘front lines’ and are most familiar with water use in their area of operations
• Development of infrastructure for water conservation principles, including waste water monitoring, control, treatment and reporting as required
• Quarterly communications with employees regarding FloBeds’ water use and conservation activities and/or results
• Development of annual water use reduction plans in each applicable department that set specific water use reduction targets and measure progress to these targets
• Engaging suppliers to reduce water use as applicable
Water Usage Performance Metrics:
• Performance will be evaluated on at least an annual basis using utility provider invoices, fuel purchase invoices, and other energy purchases as applicable, converted to monthly, quarterly and annual energy use rates.
• This information will be used for energy use reporting and other sustainability reporting mechanisms.
Carbon Emissions
It is important that FloBeds develop a full understanding of our overall carbon footprint. Over time, we will build our understanding of our carbon emission due to our direct operations and our indirect impacts.
Carbon Emissions Policy
Understanding our full carbon emissions impact will begin with measuring our direct operational impacts through Scopes 1 and 2 GHG emissions calculations. Once we understand this level of company impact, we will expand our perspective to measure and manage select Scope 3 indirect emissions.
Carbon Emission Performance Metrics:
• Using the data collected through our waste, energy and water use tracking, we will calculate our Carbon Emissions from direct operations on at least an annual basis.
• In subsequent years, we will add carbon emissions calculations from indirect impacts (supplier freight, business travel, employee commuting, and other select Scope 3 measures).
• This information will be used for carbon footprint reporting and other sustainability reporting mechanisms.
