GLOBAL GREEN USA AUGUST 16, 2018

The Thomas Fire took place in Ventura County, CA during December 2017. The fire burned over 280,000 acres and was the largest in California’s history. The catastrophic combination of periods of El Niño and drought conditions followed by the typical, dry, Santa Ana winds contributed to the fire’s unprecedented size. These conditions are expected to continue (and worsen), meaning residents in the area will need to find ways to adapt to their changing climate and improve their resilience.

The destruction caused by the Thomas Fire provides an opportunity; the rebuilding effort that will take place over the coming years creates an excellent moment for the Central Coast to build back green and more resilient.

That is why Global Green is partnering with the Los Angeles and Central Coast chapters of the U.S. Green Building Council to bring free, green rebuilding/repair education and one-on-one technical assistance to the residents of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties through the Thomas Fire Green Rebuilding Resilience Initiative.

Registered residents will be matched with one of our volunteer green building experts, who will provide free, one-on-one green rebuilding technical assistance, as well as energy modeling services, for homeowners affected by the fire.

Proposal:

The project launched in June 2018 and will last for approximately one year.

The goal of the initiative is to implement baseline green building strategies focused on energy efficiency, water savings, indoor air quality, and resilience and to increase the number of certified green homes in the area using the LEED for Homes (or comparable) standard.
