SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
At Zeal Optics, we draw our inspiration from the outdoors. Being based in Boulder, Colorado allows us to take in spectacular views and adventures, which we are committed to protecting for future generations to experience with the same sense of awe-inspiring clarity we do today. To achieve this, we continually strive to reduce the environmental impacts of our products and practices, with an untiring dedication to make our company as
sustainable as possible.

Sustainably-Focused Products
We use plant-based materials in all of our sunglasses to help reduce our environmental impact while providing amazing optical clarity and protection. The majority of our frames are composed of Z-Resin, a material derived from the castor bean; while the remaining collection is made from See Grass, a material composed of agricultural waste fibers and recycled plastic made in a closed-loop system. These frame materials, paired with our plant-based Ellume Polarized lens, allow us to replace traditional petroleum-based plastics in our sunglasses with innovative, eco-acetate materials.

Sustainably-Minded Practices
We believe that the road to sustainability is rooted in practice, where every action taken has a purpose. At Zeal, we use only Forest Stewardship Council certified paper in the production of our catalogs and packaging, ensuring the materials we print do not compromise the health of the world’s forests. In our Rx lab, we have developed the first zero-waste process to recycle all excess lens material from manufacturing. We have removed all single-used plastics from our packaging and make our sunglass and goggle bags recycled plastic. From our recycling and compost bins, to the reclaimed beetle kill wood in our office and flagship store, every decision makes a difference and we’re constantly striving to further reduce our footprint.

Sustainably-Inspired Projects & Partnerships
Actions speak louder than words, which is why we take the initiative, on our own and with our partners, to create lasting change. We are all connected, and all have a part to play, that is why we are proud to be members of 1% for the Planet, committing to giving 1% of our gross sales to environmental and sustainability-focused nonprofits. As a company, we support our local community with trail restoration, stream cleanups and reforestation initiatives like Project 5480, a long-standing initiative to plant 5,480 trees on an annual basis with the National Forest Foundation. Outside of our Colorado-backyard, we work with a host of partners on issues that impact all of us, such as helping fight sun related eye disease, pollution, climate change and a host of other causes with monthly fundraisers, educational events, speaker series, donations and more.
