Green Event Details: Millennium Awards 2012

June 2nd, 2012

As always, we take great care in making sure to plan our work events to be as eco-friendly as possible. Here’s the scoop on green event details for our 16th Annual Millennium Awards at the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica:

General Green Event Rules: Choose table arrangements and other greens/flowers that are composed of organic and reusable plants, flowers, and other materials.

Millennium Awards 2012 Details: Local landscaper Big Red Sun has once again created table arrangements made with drought-resistent succulents and vegetables (fennel!), artfully arranged in hollowed tree trunks.

General Green Event Rules: Serve organic, seasonal, and sustainable food. Whenever possible, use produce from local farmers and merchants.

Millennium Awards 2012 Details: Our menu from Chef Ray Garcia of Fig, the restaurant inside the hotel, consists of ingredients that are seasonal, sustainable and organic, including roasted cauliflower soup, and mustard lacquered salmon with braised leeks, cucumbers, and Half Moon Bay English peas.

General Green Event Rules: Serve organic wine and spirits that are organic and biodynamic. For other drinks, opt for naturally flavored soft drinks and organic juices. Use reusable glassware.

Millennium Awards 2012 Details:  Our Events Manager Nina Storm created a specialty cocktail for the event using organic 360 Vodka (Spiked Salad Cocktail recipe). Sustainable California wines from J. Lohr Estates were paired with dinner: the Riverstone Chardonnay from Arroyo Seco and South Ridge Syrah from Paso Robles.

General Green Event Rules: Encourage public transportation, carpooling, or travel in hybrid or electric vehicles.

Millennium Awards 2012 Details: One of the night’s honorees, Mike Sullivan of LAcarGUY (pictured), supplied a fleet of hybrid and clean diesel vehicles for honored guests: Audi Etron, VW Passat TDI, Fisker Karma, Prius Plugin, Lexus hybrid, Subaru Outback, Porsche Panamera Hybrid.

General Green Event Rules: Choose online and email communications when possible. Enlist a printing service that uses recycled paper and non-toxic ink for necessary printed materials, such as invitations and event programs.

Millennium Awards 2012 Details: Print invitations and programs are made by a printer we count on for using processed chlorine-free paper and vegetable-based, non-toxic inks. We also used plasma screens for most messaging at the event.

Local Love: Organic Produce in the Spotlight

Millennium Awards centerpiece
When Jamie Lee Curtis took the stage at the 15th Annual Global Green Millennium Awards to introduce honoree Ed Begley, Jr., she was toting vegetables from her table’s centerpiece–an artichoke in one hand and an eggplant in the other–and joked about going home to “make a nice soup” with them. The centerpieces were provided by Big Red Sun, a Venice landscape and design firm located a mile from our Global Green offices in Santa Monica, and made with succulents and locally-grown organic vegetables from a CSA. We were already proud of the arrangements, but it’s especially nice to hear a ringing endorsement from a guest with a microphone. And while there’s a lot to be said for a lovely flower arrangement, it was great to see exiting guests stuffing bags and pockets with produce. (Editor’s note: I made myself a steamed artichoke with lemon for lunch the next day.)
