Walker Wells, Director of Global Green's Green Urbanism program, will be participating in the Sustainability Forum at this year's Dwell on Design Conference, taking place Saturday June 27th, 2009.
The panel is from 11:30-12:00 and is entitled Room for Green: Approaching sustainability at home involves looking equally at the health of the environment outside your home and the health of the environment within it. Air quality inside can be affected by many factors, from the ducts of your HVAC system to the fiber in your mattress. In this panel we discuss strategies for making a house that is as good for the people who live in it as it is for the earth, and explore smart ways to do so affordably.

GBRC Lecture Series: Paul Kephart
Paul Kephart, President of Rana Creek Living Architecture will be speaking at the last Green Building Resource Center lecture on Friday June 26th.
Paul's firm is a leader in green roofing, best known for their work at the California Academy of Sciences. For this project, they created a living roof that covers 160,000 square feet of roof planted with over 50 plant species native to San Francisco with four steeply sloped domes replicating the surrounding rolling hills.
Paul will lecture about Rana Creek's experiences with The California Academy of Sciences and other projects the firm is currently working on as well as the benefits of living roofs such as decreased stormwater run-off, insulation, sound dampening, and the integration of living vegetation with the built environment. A short question and answer session will follow Paul's lecture, so come prepared with any questions you may have about green roofing technology.

With a broad slate of interactive, entertaining and informative resources and products, the L.A. LGBT community will get a first-hand look at the latest in accessible, sustainable products. The "Green With Pride" space will have a more interactive design than most festival spaces with the intention of educating and inspiring the community about eco-friendly alternatives for healthier home and work environment. Global Green's Green Building Resource Center is partnering with Livingreen and the U.S. Green Building Council to provide the most comprehensive information on how to move towards more sustainable living environments. Visitors will have the opportunity for a hands on learning experience about these materials and design options to get started on their way towards a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

TOPIC: Growing Your Own Food - Benefits, Techniques and Resources
Money is tight and putting your yard to productive use by growing fruit and vegetables seems like a great idea, but how realistic is this goal?
This event will explore just how easy it is for you to get started with growing your own food. Presentations will provide information on materials and programs available to new and experienced gardeners as well as the experiences and advice of an active urban farmer. Brief presentations will be followed by discussion and Q&A where our experienced panelists can offer advise and input on how you can begin growing your own food.

Green Urbanism Program Director Walker Wells will be participating in The Green Symposium at the NeighborWorks Training Institute.
This extensive green program takes place at NeighborWorks Training Institute in Phoenix, AZ from May 4-6, 2009. Two days of green practice-oriented clinics on May 4 and 5 will be combined with a one-day green symposium — Greening Your Roadmap to Succeed in a Changing Landscape — on May 6. This is an opportunity to hear how those working in community development are adopting green concepts and delivering valuable returns.

USGBC Municipal Green Building Conference Expo
Global Green will be participating in the USGBC Municipal Green Building Conference Expo. Green Building Resource Center: March Workshop
TOPIC: LEED for Existing Buildings
This event will detail the LEED for Existing Building process, benefits, and challenges. Commercial office and hospitality case studies will include the MGM offices and The Ambrose Hotel (the first LEED-EB certified hotel). Green Schools Workshop
School districts across the nation and throughout Louisana are making historic infrastructure investments, resulting in a unique opportunity to incorporate green building standards into both existing schools and new construction, creating healthy, high performance classrooms that students and teachers will use for the next thirty years or more.
Global Green USA is pleased to invite you to our third workshop in support of green schools in Louisiana. This workshop will highlight success stories in Louisiana and other states, with a focus on lessons learned, and frank discussion of how to find the funding, the will and the expertise necessary to make green schools happen.

Global Green USA's New Orleans' Office is hosting a U.S. Green Building Council workshop providing an overview of green home building, as defined by the LEED for Homes Program, an overview of the key features of a LEED home, and the related benefits of these features. The course concludes with a summary of the lessons learned in the LEED for Homes Pilot Program, and the basic steps required to build a LEED home.

GBRC Professional Development Workshop
Topic: City of Santa Monica Green Building Compliance
City of Santa Monica's Green Building Advisor, Brenden McEneaney, and other City staff will be educating building professionals about how to comply with the current City of Santa Monica's green building ordinance. This workshop will be geared towards new construction. If you're a developer, a contractor, or a building professional, this will be the workshop to attend to learn different ways to meet the City's ordinance.

TOPIC: Santa Monica's New Solar Installation Guidelines and Tax Credit
The City of Santa Monica has developed new solar installation guidelines. The purpose is to help standardize solar installation and inspection procedures while making sure all Code requirements are met.
In addition, the October passage of the "Bailout Bill" included important legislation for potential solar owners. Homeowners who put finishing touches on their system in 2009 can now get a tax credit to offset 30% of the cost - with no cap!
If you're interested in installing solar as part of a building project in Santa Monica, join us at this upcoming panel! The GBRC has invited Brenden McEneaney, City's Green Buildings Advisor, to speak on how to meet the new solar guidelines and how to qualify for the new tax credit.

Co-hosted by NRDC and the Getty Conservation Institute, and moderated by Frances Anderton, the host of KCRW's "DnA: Design and Architecture," the panel of experts from the United States and the United Kingdom will examine the increasing impact global warming has on our cities, buildings and historic monuments, and how core values of historic preservation -- sustainability and reuse of materials -- play a significant role in addressing this issue.

Walker Wells Presents at West Coast Green '08
Walker Wells presented to a packed audience on the opening day of the 2008 West Coast Green Conference in San Jose, California. His presentation included updates to Global Green USA's book, "The Blueprint for Green Affordable Housing," which has sold more than 1,300 copies to date. The presentation was immediately followed by a book signing.
