Summary of Submission Requirements and Site for Stage I

Entrants in Stage I will submit two (2) 30 x 40 presentation boards in a portrait orientation and composed side-by-side, that document clearly and concisely your approach to the project:

* One board will detail a 12 unit multi-family housing building with community center features (i.e., day care, community meeting room). * The other board will provide a site plan that serves as a sustainable urban design exercise and includes placement of 6 single family homes on the site (NOTE: the site is located in the Holy Cross neighborhood. The site has no current existing structures, and is near the levee and the Mississippi River).

Further, the sponsor intend to display a selection of the submissions from this stage of the selection process in a high traffic public setting and possibly utilize them in education  programs about the project in the future. No models will be accepted.  However photographs or computer renderings of models may be incorporated  into the presentation. All entries must be submitted anonymously. A  digital copy of your submission, in either PDF or JPG format, must be included  on a compact disc enclosed with your submission.

Visual Content

Presentation boards should have enough visual information to  thoroughly document the proposed scheme. In addition to any diagrams,  renderings, or model photos your team feels are necessary to communicate  your vision, the competition sponsors require the following visual content:

  1. Context Plan. Scaled as necessary, to fully convey how your design works in the the scale and  character of the neighborhood. Potential linkages to neighboring structures  and resources should be noted.
  2. Site Plan. 1:30 or larger, as  necessary to communicate the design of the site and the composition of the  required elements.
  3. Building Plans. 1/16 = 1-0 or larger, as necessary  to communicate the design of the building
  4. Signature View. At least  one rendering or model photo should present a postcard view of the  proposed project (i.e., the 12 unit multi-family apartment/ community center building) taken from any vantage point of your choosing.
  5. Other  Views. A series of at least six (6) images should document the project from several vantage points, inside and outside the buildings. Elevations or perspective views of each side of the site must be included. Although  the single family homes need not be designed in this stage, entries should demonstrate clearly their massing, especially as it relates to the  other pragmatic elements on the site (including the apartment building/day-care center, etc.)
  6. Floor Plans. All relevant floor plans  for the Apartment / Day Care Center / Community Building.
  7. Sections.  At least one section and preferably two through the Apartment / Day  Care Center / Community Building.
  8. Detail. Representative detail of  green construction and/or sustainable technology features.
  9. Diagrams.  As necessary to fully explain your project and the intentions behind  it, particularly as they relate to sustainable planning and design.

Written Content

Written descriptions must be included on the presentation  side of the board and incorporated into the graphic layout of the concept.  Written content must be straightforward and devoid of architectural jargon.  Text should succinctly describe the project and the ideas that  generated it. Narrative must include, but should not be limited to:

  1. Concept. (300 words) The sponsors want to understand the ideas driving your design and your approach to the problem. Provide a  statement describing the overall design concept, how it was derived, and  how it is reflected in the completed design.
  2. Green Design (300  words) Competitors must identify and explain their strategies for sustainable design and development in lay terms.

Entrants may elect  to construct digital or physical study models of their project. Although  helpful tools, these should not be sent as part of the submission. The  quality of each teams submission will be based on information contained on  the boards.
