New Orleans Regional Committee
Global Green in New Orleans
Global Green was one of the first environmental organizations to open a New Orleans office shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and is collaborating with environmentalists, community developers, political leaders, schools, urban organizations and others to create the building blocks for a climate friendly, model sustainable city for the 21st century.
Global Green also:
- Completed the first home in Global Green’s Holy Cross Project, a sustainable neighborhood in the Lower Ninth Ward. The home, whose solar panels will generate enough electricity to power the home, will be LEED Platinum certified. It is built with all green products and energy efficient systems that will save residents money, reduce exposure to toxic chemicals and lower global warming pollution. It currently serves as a Visitor Center for the public and a model for how to build a sustainable green house in New Orleans and other coastal cities. The Holy Cross Project will eventually have five single-family homes, an apartment complex, and community center.
- Launched Build it Back Green, a new initiative that will make it easier for Louisiana residents to learn how to find and install simple, cost-effective green products into their homes. The program is expected to reach thousands of New Orleans residents through a combination of the Road Home program, the Global Green website, the Global Green House in Holy Cross, workshops, and one on one consultations.
- Launched the Green Schools initiative, which grants thousands of dollars to five New Orleans schools in order for them to be updated with the latest in water and energy conservation technology. The first Green Seed School, A.P. Tureaud Elementary, will save $24,561 annually because of the conversion. The second, International School of Louisiana, will receive projected annual cost savings of $20,000. The third school, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School, has received $70,000 in funding and technical assistance to become a Green Seed School. A second phase will result in the creation of new high performance LEED certified showcase green schools including the major rehabilitation of Andrew H. Wilson Elementary.
- Opened a Green Building Resource Center in downtown New Orleans, showcasing more than 60 green building materials and providing books, magazines, computers and one-on-one consultation to residents as they begin to rebuild. The Resource Center holds monthly green building panels and workshops.
