Remembering a good friend: Pam Dashiell
Following the dedication of our Visitors Center to Pam last Wednesday, it is with deep honor we remember her life’s work and the vital role she played in helping Global Green’s Holy Cross Project become a reality. Born in Roxbury, Mass., she moved to New Orleans and then the Holy Cross neighborhood more than 20 years ago, where she worked tirelessly pre- and post-Katrina as a community activist and advocate for environmental justice. She served as president of the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association for eight years and co-founded the Lower 9th Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development. In addition to participating as a judge for the New Orleans Sustainable Design Competition, she led many green rebuilding efforts throughout Holy Cross and the Lower Nine. She also worked as a program coordinator for the Louisiana Bucket Brigade Holy Cross/Lower 9th Ward Initiative, as an adviser for the Gulf Coast Fund and as a board member for Smartgrowth Louisiana, the Alliance for Affordable Energy and the National Center for Community Health Research.
Pam passed away suddenly on December 1, 2009, and we’ll miss her smiling face and determined spirit – yet her presence is felt every day on this emerging, green place at Douglass and Andry Streets!
