• On Eve of 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Green Renaissance Takes Hold In New Orleans

  NEW ORLEANS - As New Orleans, the nation and the world prepare to mark the 5th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on August 29 (and the devastating aftermath), I have been reflecting on the personal journey I have taken these past 5 years in my love affair with this great city.

  "Like many folks, I was devastated by the tragedy of the Deepwater Horizon explosion, the loss of life there, and this horrific ecological tragedy that has ensued. I don't believe that BP or our government fully understand the breadth of the tragedy, its permanent effect on the Gulf of Mexico, and how many millions of families and livelihoods are going to be permanently affected. I'm thankful for organizations like Global Green."

• The Right to safe drinking water and basic sanitation

  In an op-ed in the New York Times last week, Green Cross International founder Mikhail Gorbachev wrote abut the right to water and sanitation: The United Nations estimates that nearly 900 million people live without clean water and 2.6 billion without proper sanitation. Water, the basic ingredient of life, is among the world’s most prolific killers. [...]

• Healing the Gulf through Song: An Evening with Peter Seeger and Friends

  Stanley Kules, a Global Green NY regional committee member, had helped arrange a series of three benefit concerts for Global Green USA and the Gulf Restoration Network at the City Winery in New York City. I was to go and talk about the spill, Global Green’s initiatives, and to thank the audience, musicians, and the City Winery for their support.

• Talking Trash: A (Waste) Sort Story

  The Mission: Re-envision recycling for a hip quick service restaurant chain new to New York City. Our job was to measure the waste stream and develop a recycling system for the restaurant that suited its needs, based on the clientele coming in and the waste stream coming out. We unpacked our scales, buckets, and gloves, and got to work.
